May 14, 2019The 1st Annual Pickleball Classic was held on April 23 & 24th at the Nopone Road Community Center as a benefit event for ITNLanier. Funds raised will help keep ITNLanier ride costs down as the service continues to help Hall County Seniors and the Visually Impaired get out and about when they can no longer drive for themselves.
Twenty-six teams – fifty-two pickleball players enjoyed the new Hall County Parks & Leisure venue on Nopone Road for two days of bracket play. Players recognized the generosity of Twenty-four sponsorships from the community and were impressed with the organization of the event. Pickleball players from all over the North Georgia region enjoyed two days of spirited play and fellowship.

This was a very successful event that will clearly grow each year. Plans are being made for April of 2020 and many of this year’s players are expected to return.

West Hartford Mayor Scott Slifka proclaimed Sept. 24, 2015 ITNCentralCT Day
October 2, 2015SEPT. 24, 2015 – WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – In honor of ITNCentralCT‘s 10,000th ride and the 20th anniversary of the Independent Transportation Network as a whole, the Town Council of West Hartford declared Sept. 24, 2015 to be “ITNCentralCT Day.”
Mayor Scott Slifka presented ITNCentralCT Executive Director Kevin Farmer with the Proclamation at the West Hartford Town Council Meeting at the West Hartford Town Hall. Watch a video of the presentation from 42:58 to 48:18 here.
ITNCentralCT‘s Kevin Farmer, upon accepting the Proclamation, stated: “Our greatest need is to grow so we can serve our community. We need additional volunteers and financial supporters, and this proclamation will help us along that pathway.”
West Hartford’s Town Council has been instrumental in bringing the Independent Transportation Network to Connecticut, and specifically in promoting and supporting ITNCentralCT‘s mission of providing sustainable, community-based transportation services for seniors and adults with visual impairment, thereby preserving and promoting independence. ITNCentralCT provides safe, affordable, arm-through-arm, door-through-door rides any time, for any reason.
Mayor Slifka, and former Mayor Jonathan Harris, started working with ITNAmerica in 2003. This collaboration led to the creation of ITNCentralCT, which first started giving rides in April 2009. ITNCentralCT is headquartered in Room 216 in West Hartford Town Hall, and enjoys financial and volunteer support throughout its fifteen-town service area, from Middletown in the south, to West Hartford in the north.

Nancy Feichtl outlines launching plans for iTNSouthernDelaware that will provide affordable, dependable transportation for members 55 years of age and over.
GEORGETOWN – A private-sector, non-profit transportation solution for Sussex County’s aging seniors who cannot or no longer want to drive is on the launching pad.
Memberships and volunteer drivers are the month of August focus as iTNSouthernDelaware gears up for a September 2015 launch of its ride program for seniors 55 and over.
“We have happily become an affiliate of iTN (Independent Transportation Network) America,” said Nancy Feichtl, founder of iTNSouthernDelaware, in an update to Sussex County Council Tuesday. “We became an affiliate with the only nationwide senior transportation cooperative.”

August 17, 2015In 1988, Katherine Freund was set on a new path. That’s when an 84-year-old driver, who should not have been behind the wheel, hit her 3-year old son. The son survived the life-threatening brain injury, is healthy and now in his thirties. But the event led Freund, then working on graduate studies in public policy, to explore this question: what options are to seniors as they lose their ability to drive?
It’s been said that when “I” is replaced with “we,” illness becomes wellness. This is certainly true for elderly people as they seek help getting to vital medical appointments. In the United States seniors typically outlive their ability drive—seven years for men and a decade for women. And this has a big impact on their health.

July 21, 2015Ruth Combs stood on the sidewalk in front of her Orlando home in a pastel belted dress, stud earrings and rimless glasses, awaiting her ride on a recent afternoon. When the cherry-red Toyota Camry pulled up, she got in with ease.
“Since my husband has passed away, ITN has been like my soul mate again, you know?” said Combs, 80.
ITNOrlando is one of a handful of local groups that help shuttle the elderly to doctors appointments and errands.
Central Florida offers few options for older Americans who are retiring their car keys. For seniors who can no longer drive, the lack of alternatives poses myriad health concerns, psychologists say.

PORTLAND, Maine – A group celebrated two decades of providing transportation to the visually impaired and aging drivers.
The organization ITNAmerica launched a 60-day national road trip to commemorate the anniversary of the nonprofit organization.
Each year, thousands of Americans take advantage of the Independent Transportation Network, which allows people who cannot drive or choose to give up their keys a transportation alternative.

PORTLAND, Maine – Spurred on by a traumatic personal experience, Katherine Freund of Portland has spent the last two decades helping the elderly and visually impaired access what she calls “dignified transportation.”
Next week she’ll be celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Independent Transportation Network that she created.
ITN provides rides to seniors who no longer feel safe behind the wheel. Over the years, the network has grown from a local operation to one that helps thousands of people in 21 states. But it’s not growing fast enough to meet the needs of a rapidly aging population.
It’s 1:30 on a weekday afternoon in Westbrook and 86-year-old Rose Novick is getting a ride home from the furniture store where she works.

June 4, 2015Group joining national affiliate ahead of launch
A primarily volunteer-run, discounted fare-based transportation program serving Hall County’s seniors could begin hitting the road in December.
“By that time, we’d like to have an executive director on board, drivers and people familiar with (internal) software so we can start our rides,” said Gary Lawrence, the group’s co-chairman.
But first, the nonprofit ITNLanier — or Independent Transportation Network Lanier – expects to become a national affiliate of ITNAmerica, and the first such one in Georgia, by June 15.
The group is paying $25,000 in affiliation fees but in return will get software “to track our trips, so we know where people are going and when they’re going there.”
“It’s going to be a very powerful tool for us,” Lawrence said, speaking Wednesday to the Greater Hall Chamber of Commerce’s Health Care Committee.
