The “golden years” are another road to travel on the journey of life. But on this venture we may encounter some roadblocks or detours. A major one is running into a health issue.

Some of us “golden agers,” because of a health issue, may have to retire from driving. When this decision is made, we immediately are consumed with fear. Fear of giving up our independence. How are we going to get to appointments, run our errands or just take a drive to the ocean?

For me, I never had a license because of an eye problem. My husband drove until he was diagnosed with a progressive neurological disorder that caused him to no longer be able to drive. The above questions became my reality. My friend told me about ITN (Independent Transportation Network). ITNPortland, located in Westbrook, offers rides to seniors and the visually impaired within a 15-mile radius of Portland at an affordable rate.

From Kiplinger’s Retirement Report, October 2016

“Like many couples, Catherine Berger and husband raised their children in a suburban single-family house—in a subdivision an hour from downtown Atlanta. But after the kids left home and her husband died, she says, “there was nothing in the community for me.

Fourteen years ago, Berger, 73, moved into a townhouse in Inman Park, an Atlanta neighborhood known for its historic Victorian homes. She can walk to a hub of restaurants, parks, theaters and a variety of neighborhood activities. “It’s an attractive community for people growing older who don’t want to be isolated and who want to continue a very active life,” she says.”

“As in other states, there are more seniors on the roads in Maine and they are driving into their 80s and beyond at far greater numbers than past generations. Nearly a quarter of Maine’s licensed drivers are over the age of 65.

As a result, the number of Mainers aged 65 and older who are involved in fatal accidents increased by 17 percent between 2012 and 2016, according to a recent analysis by TRIP, a national transportation research group. Twenty-three percent of the state’s fatal vehicle accidents involved a driver over the age of 65.

“The south side of Hall County is experiencing rapid growth and many 55-and-older communities have been built in the area with more being planned,” said Don Colombero, marketing director of Legacy Link, an Oakwood-based program that offers a variety of services for senior adults.

“Having the Healthy Aging Expo in this area allows Legacy Link to inform seniors about all of our programs.”

The Times is holding its second Healthy Aging Expo Wednesday, March 14, at The Venue at Friendship Springs, 7340 Friendship Springs Blvd., Braselton. Friendship Springs is off Spout Springs Road, a main traffic artery in South Hall.
